How do I make my AI chats more private (history, memory, training)?
Short answer: Every major assistant has a privacy setting: ChatGPT has Data controls and Memory, Claude has a Privacy setting for model training, and Gemini has Gemini Apps Activity. Review them on day one, and don't paste anything you wouldn't want stored.
| Bot | Setting to check |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Data controls (model training) and Memory (review and delete saved memories). Menu names from the app; OpenAI's help center blocked our checker. |
| Claude | Privacy: the model-training choice |
| Gemini | Gemini Apps Activity: whether chats are kept |
| Midjourney | Images are public unless you use Stealth Mode (Pro and Mega only) |
- Don't paste passwords, ID numbers, card numbers or other people's private details.
- Assume the company can read and keep your chats unless its official policy says otherwise.
- For health, money or legal decisions, confirm with a professional or an official source.
