How to use ChatGPT effectively (7 habits that work)
1. Use the 4-part prompt
Role, task, context, format.
You are a [role].
Task: [what you want, one sentence].
Context: [who it's for, facts it must use, what to avoid].
Format: [bullets / table / 150 words / email].Bad: "write something about our sale"
Good: "Write a 60-word Instagram caption for a 20%-off fall sale at a family bike shop in Salem, OR. Friendly, no hashtags."
2. One task per chat
Long chats get slower, drift, and burn more usage. Start a fresh chat when the topic changes, and paste a 3-line summary if needed.
3. Give it the source
Paste the text or upload the file instead of asking it to remember. Ask it to quote the part it used.
4. Ask for options, then pick
"Give me 3 versions, each under 50 words." Choosing is faster than rewriting.
5. Check facts
Ask "Which claims here should I verify, and where?" then check them. See catching made-up answers.
6. Use Projects and Work for real jobs
Projects keep files and instructions together. For multi-step jobs (reports, spreadsheets, decks), see ChatGPT Work.
7. Save your best prompts
Keep a note of prompts that worked. Reuse beats reinventing. See Scripts & templates.
