How do I use Copilot in Excel?

Short answer: Copilot in the desktop Excel app comes with a Microsoft 365 plan (Personal, Family owner, Premium or a business plan with Copilot). Open your workbook, open Copilot, and describe your columns, the goal and the period. Always test the formula on a few rows.
  1. Sign in to Excel with the account that has the Microsoft 365 plan (work files: work account).
  2. Open the workbook and the Copilot pane.
  3. Name your columns and goal, e.g. the prompt below.
  4. Ask it to explain each part of the formula.
  5. Check the result on 3 rows by hand.
I have columns Date, Rep and Amount. Give me a formula for total Amount per Rep for March 2026, and explain each part. Then tell me how to test it on 3 rows.
