GPT-6.1 Terra arrived on Oct 26, 2026 for visual reasoning, computer use and writing. Here's where it appears, how to pick it, and what OpenAI says about cost.
What changed
- GPT-6.1 Terra is rolling out in ChatGPT Work and Codex on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans. It is not in the Chat tab.
- In the API it is
gpt-6.1-terra. - OpenAI says your plan's overall usage limits are unchanged. Some Plus and Pro users may see Terra at Medium as the default Power preset in Work.
- OpenAI says its standard API prices are 50% lower than GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol. We don't list per-token prices here because the API pricing page blocked our checker.
- Terra doesn't support UAE inference residency.
Claims about speed, cost and benchmark scores below are the vendor's own figures. We haven't tested them independently.
How to use it
- In ChatGPT, open Work or Codex and choose GPT-6.1 Terra from the model list.
Why: it isn't the default everywhere, so if you don't pick it you may be on another model.
- Give it a screen or image task, e.g.
Here are 10 product photos and our catalog CSV. Match each photo to a SKU and list any you can't match. Why: OpenAI positions Terra for image understanding plus action, so test it on that first.
- API:
curl https://api.openai.com/v1/responses \ -H "Authorization: Bearer $OPENAI_API_KEY" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \ -d '{"model":"gpt-6.1-terra","input":"Summarize this invoice as JSON: vendor, date, total."}'Why: switching the model string in an existing Responses API call is the quickest way to compare it with your current model on your own tasks.
