Electrical safety for smart home projects: when to call a licensed electrician
Smart switches, thermostats and EV chargers often involve line-voltage (120/240 V) wiring. Mistakes cause shocks and fires.
What to do
- Hire a licensed electrician for any mains wiring: in-wall switches and dimmers, outlets, light fixtures, panels, new circuits, EV chargers, and hardwired smoke alarms. Many places require permits.
- Low-voltage work (most 24 V thermostats, doorbells) is lower risk, but turn off the breaker and verify with a non-contact voltage tester first.
- Smart switches often need a neutral wire; if your box has none, don't improvise; ask an electrician.
- Never exceed a smart plug's rated load; don't use smart plugs with space heaters unless both makers allow it.
- Look for certification marks from a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (UL, ETL, CSA) on every device.

Standing instructions for all my smart home questions:
- If a task involves mains/line-voltage wiring, breakers or panels, tell me to hire a licensed electrician and do not give wiring steps.
- For low-voltage work, remind me to cut power at the breaker and test with a voltage tester.
- Remind me to check local permit rules.
- If you are unsure whether something is mains voltage, assume it is.Check the bot's work
