Smart home sensors 101: motion, contact, temperature, leak and air
Sensors are what make a home "smart" instead of just remote-controlled.
What to do
- Contact (doors, windows): magnet + reed switch; very reliable.
- Motion (PIR): detects body heat moving; mount at the height the maker recommends, away from heaters.
- Temperature/humidity: away from direct sun and vents.
- Leak: on the floor near water heaters, washers, sinks and the fridge water line.
- Air quality: CO2, VOC or particulate sensors are informational; they are not a substitute for listed smoke and CO alarms.
