Perplexity tutorial: setup, strengths, costs, mistakes, prompts

Everything in one lesson, split into tabs. Made by Perplexity. Official source: https://www.perplexity.ai/.

Setup

Open it

perplexity.ai or the app. Ask a question; every answer comes with numbered source links.

Organize

Group related searches so you can come back to them; delete threads with personal info.

First steps

Step 1: Open Perplexity

Go to perplexity.ai.

Step 2: Ask, then open the sources

Perplexity answers show source links. Open them and read the original before you rely on an answer.

Writing

Say who it's for, the length, and the tone, e.g. "Write a 100-word thank-you note to a customer, warm, no jargon." Then ask Perplexity to shorten or rewrite it.

Research

Ask Perplexity for sources, then open them. Don't rely on a summary you haven't checked.

Files

Upload only what you're OK sharing, and tell Perplexity exactly what to pull out, e.g. "list every date and dollar amount in this PDF."

Good & bad at

Good at

  • Fast research with citations
  • Current events and comparisons where sources matter

Careful with

  • A citation number next to a sentence doesn't mean the source says it: open it
  • Low-quality sources get cited too: prefer official sites ("use only .gov sources")

Cost control

Pricing

Perplexity's plan pages blocked our checker (Oct 28, 2026), so no prices here. Check perplexity.ai/pro.

Common mistakes

Not opening sources

Fix: open at least the source behind any number you'll repeat.

Prompt examples

Source-restricted

"What are the current federal flood insurance waiting periods? Use only fema.gov or floodsmart.gov and quote them."

Why: restricting sources removes blog-post noise.

Features & plans

Features

Perplexity's official pages blocked our checker (403 error, Oct 28, 2026), so this page lists no features we haven't confirmed.

Plans

We couldn't load Perplexity's plan pages on Oct 28, 2026 (403 error), so we list no prices. Check perplexity.ai/pro.

Check the sources

A link isn't proof. Make sure the source actually says what the answer claims.

Checked Oct 28, 2026 against the official pages linked here. Plans change, so confirm on the official page before you pay.
