ElevenLabs Advanced tutorial
For regular ElevenLabs users who want repeatable workflows and fewer surprises.

Decompose and chain
- Split a big job into steps with a clear output each.
- Feed each step's output into the next.
- Check the output between steps, not just at the end.
Why this step matters: Small steps with a checked output each fail visibly and early, instead of one big answer that is wrong somewhere.

Structured output
Ask for a fixed table or JSON so you can check and reuse it.
Return only JSON: [{"claim": "...", "source_url": "...", "quote": "...", "confidence": "high|medium|low"}]Why this step matters: A fixed format can be checked by eye or by code and reused without retyping.

Automation and agents
ElevenLabs has an API for text to speech and more. Test voices and settings on short samples, cache audio you reuse, and watch credit use.
Why this step matters: Automation repeats mistakes at scale, so you need to know exactly what is run and what is checked.

Failure modes to watch
- Mispronounced names, numbers and acronyms. Spell them phonetically.
- Tone that doesn’t fit the script. Try another voice.
- Credit drain from regenerating long files.
Why this step matters: Knowing how it typically fails tells you where to look when you review its work.

Cost control
- Free: 10k credits/month.
- Starter: $6/month, 30k credits, commercial licence, Instant Voice Cloning.
- Creator: $22/month, 121k credits, Professional Voice Cloning.
- Pro: $99/month, 600k credits.
- Scale: $299/month. Business: $990/month.
Yearly billing costs 10 months’ price. Paid credits roll over up to 2 months. Text to speech is about 1 credit per character (elevenlabs.io/pricing, checked Oct 30, 2026).
Credits per month by plan (Free 10k; Starter 30k; Creator 121k; Pro 600k). Paid credits roll over up to 2 months (elevenlabs.io/pricing).
Why this step matters: Paying for features you don't use is the most common waste. Knowing the limits first tells you if the free tier is enough.

Privacy and team rules
- Don't paste passwords, ID numbers, card numbers or other people's private details.
- Assume the company can read and keep your chats unless its official policy says otherwise.
- For health, money or legal decisions, confirm with a professional or an official source.
- Only clone a voice you own or have written permission to use.
- Label AI voices in public content where your platform or law requires it.
- Write down which data is allowed in which tool, and who approves paid plans.
Why this step matters: Anything you paste may be stored and read. Deciding what never goes in is easier than undoing a leak.

Build a 10-task test set
- Collect 10 real tasks with known good answers.
- Run them now and score each pass/fail.
- Re-run them when the model, plan or your prompt changes.
- Keep the prompt that wins, not the one that feels better.
Why this step matters: Without a fixed test set, 'better' just means 'felt better'. Scores let you compare prompts and models fairly.
