How to research with Perplexity

  1. Write the question with a place, a date range and a source rule.
  2. Read the answer, then open the sources.
  3. Ask: "Which claims have only one source? Which sources are older than a year?"
  4. Ask for a table with a link and a date for every row.
  5. Spot-check two rows by hand before you use it.
Research question: [question]
Sources: official sites, government pages, or the company's own pages only.
For each claim give: the claim, a quoted sentence, the link, the date of the page.
Then list anything you could find only one source for.

Picking the right search mode

ModeGood forWatch out for
Quick searchSingle facts, definitionsShallow answers on hard topics
Pro SearchQuestions with several partsUses more of your plan's allowance (amounts not confirmed)
Deep ResearchReport-length comparisonsIt takes longer and makes many claims, so check them

Library, Spaces and Pages

Your Library holds your threads (App Store listing). Spaces and Pages are described on Perplexity's site, but the help pages explaining them blocked us, so check the app for the details.

Files and privacy

From the attached file, list every date, dollar amount and deadline.
For each, give the page number and the exact sentence.
If something is unclear, say "unclear" instead of guessing.

Plans and prices

From the US App Store listing: Perplexity Pro is listed at $20.00 and $200.00, Max at $200.00, and credits at 500 for $5, 1,000 for $10, 2,500 for $25 and 5,000 for $50. The listing doesn't state billing periods. Subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel 24 hours before the period ends.

perplexity.ai's own help and plan pages blocked our checker on Oct 29, 2026 (403 errors), so we confirmed what we could from Perplexity's App Store listing and its developer docs at docs.perplexity.ai.

Common mistakes and fixes

MistakeFix
Quoting a number you never openedOpen the source and find the number on the page
Using a blog as a sourceAsk for official sources only
One-word questionsAdd a place, a date and the format you want
Uploading unredacted documentsRedact first
Paying for the wrong periodCheck monthly vs yearly at checkout
Using the app's output in production codeUse the API, which is billed and documented separately

Prompt library (bad vs good)

Bad: cheap flights to Tokyo

Good: What are typical round-trip economy fares from LAX to Tokyo in March? Use airline and Google Flights pages, give dates you saw them, and say if prices are estimates.

Why: a route, a month and a note about how reliable the numbers are.

Bad: is my landlord allowed to

Good: Under California law, how much notice must a landlord give before entering a rental? Use leginfo.legislature.ca.gov or courts.ca.gov and quote the section.

Why: a state, an official source and a quote.

Bad: summarize this

Good: Summarize the attached PDF in 5 bullets for a busy manager, then list 3 numbers I should double-check, with page numbers.

Why: an audience, a length and things to check.

Perplexity vs other bots

Pick Perplexity when you need sources first. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can also search the web, but their main strength is writing and reasoning. See ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.

Use-case playbooks

Price check with sources

  1. Ask for options with price, date and source link in a table.
  2. Ask: which claims rest on only one source?
  3. Open each official page and confirm the price.
  4. Save the table with the date you checked.

Literature or news scan

  1. Ask for the 5 most relevant sources from the last 12 months.
  2. Ask for one-sentence summaries with the date of each.
  3. Open the two most important sources yourself.
  4. Write your own conclusion from what you read.

Vendor shortlist

  1. List your must-haves first.
  2. Ask Pro Search to compare 5 vendors against them with links.
  3. Drop any vendor whose claims you can't confirm on its own site.

Troubleshooting

I hit a limit. What now?

We couldn't read Perplexity's plan pages (blocked), so we can't confirm per-plan Pro Search or Deep Research counts. Start a new chat with a short summary instead of dragging a long one.

The answer cites a page that doesn't say that.

Treat the claim as unverified. Ask: quote the exact sentence from that page that supports this, or say it isn't there. Then open the page yourself.

It forgot my earlier instructions.

Long chats push early text out of context. Put standing instructions where Perplexity keeps them (Library (past threads). The website also mentions Spaces and Pages; we couldn't open the help pages that explain them, so check them in the app.) and start a fresh chat.

It agrees with everything I say.

Ask it to argue the other side and list the strongest evidence against your view, with sources.

How do I keep costs down?

App Store in-app purchases list Pro, Max and credit packs. The API is billed separately with prepaid credits. Start with quick search and step up only when the answer is thin.

Cost control

We couldn't read Perplexity's plan pages (blocked), so we can't confirm per-plan Pro Search or Deep Research counts.

Prompt library: bad vs good

Bad: help me

Good: Which US prepaid phone plans under $30/month include 5G hotspot data as of this month? Use carrier websites only and give the price and data cap for each.

Why: situation, task, format and limits.

Bad: research this

Good: Find the 5 most relevant official sources from the last 12 months on [topic]. For each: title, date, link, and one sentence it actually says.

Why: asks for dated, quotable, checkable sources.

Bad: make it better

Good: Rewrite this for a busy customer: max 100 words, one ask, no jargon. Then list what you cut.

Why: a reader, a length and an audit of changes.

Bad: should I do X?

Good: List the 3 strongest reasons for and against X for someone in [situation]. Mark which reasons depend on facts I should check.

Why: balanced, and separates facts from judgement.

Privacy and safety

Threads keep context for follow-ups; your Library keeps past threads (App Store listing). Perplexity's help pages blocked our checker, so other menu names are unconfirmed.

Failure modes to watch

When to use it vs other bots

Use Perplexity forConsider another bot when
  • Current facts that need sources
  • Comparing products, vendors or rules with links
  • Quick research you will verify
  • Long creative writing with no sources
  • Anything where you can't open and check the cited pages
