NotebookLM Beginner tutorial
Start here if you've never used NotebookLM. Seven short steps, a quiz and a checklist.
Beginner · step 1 of 7
What NotebookLM is (and isn't)
NotebookLM is Google’s research notebook: you add sources (PDFs, docs, web pages, videos) and it answers only from them, with citations back to the exact passage. It can also make Audio Overviews, a podcast-style discussion of your sources. Google’s newer help pages call the product Gemini Notebook; the notebooklm.google.com address still works for many users.
Good for:
- Studying a course from its readings
- Fact sheets from contracts and policies
- Comparing what several reports say
Not good for:
- Questions your sources don’t cover
- Live news or prices
- Files with private data you have no right to share
Why this step matters: Knowing what it is good and bad at stops you using it for jobs where it will fail quietly.

Get the official app
- Start from notebooklm.google.com or Google’s official app listing.
- Sign in with your Google account. Work or school accounts may need an admin to turn it on.
- Create one notebook and add one source to see how citations look.
Why this step matters: Copycat apps and unofficial installers are common; starting from the official source protects your account and data.
Beginner · step 3 of 7
Your first useful prompt
Give it a situation, a task and the format you want. Try this:
Using only my sources, list every deadline and dollar amount, each with a citation.
If something is not in the sources, say "not in sources".Then ask one follow-up that narrows it down.
A good result: output in the format you asked for, built only on what you gave it. If it drifts into generic advice, add the situation sentence again.
Why this step matters: A prompt with situation, task and format gets a usable answer first time, so you learn what the tool can actually do.

Check the answer
- Ask for the source of any fact you'll reuse.
- Open the link and find the exact sentence (Ctrl+F).
- If you can't find it, treat the claim as unverified.
- For files, check two page or row references yourself.
Before you answer: separate what you checked from what you're assuming. Write "unknown" instead of guessing. Give a link for every number. Why this step matters: Chatbots state wrong facts in the same confident tone as right ones. Checking is the only way to tell them apart.

Privacy basics
- Don't paste passwords, ID numbers, card numbers or other people's private details.
- Assume the company can read and keep your chats unless its official policy says otherwise.
- For health, money or legal decisions, confirm with a professional or an official source.
- Google says your NotebookLM data is not used to train models unless you send feedback. Don’t include private data in feedback.
- Shared notebooks show your sources to everyone you share with.
Why this step matters: Anything you paste may be stored and read. Deciding what never goes in is easier than undoing a leak.

What it costs
The Standard (free) tier allows 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook, 50 chats a day, 3 Audio Overviews a day and 10 Deep Research runs a month. Paid Google AI plans raise this: Plus 200 notebooks and 100 sources; Pro 500 notebooks, 300 sources, 500 chats and 20 Audio Overviews a day; Ultra up to 600 sources. Each source can be up to 500,000 words or 200 MB.
Since Sep 2, 2026, some limits are compute-based: they refresh every 5 hours with a weekly cap (Google help, answer 16213268).
Full details: NotebookLM step-by-step tutorial.
Why this step matters: Paying for features you don't use is the most common waste. Knowing the limits first tells you if the free tier is enough.
Beginner · step 7 of 7
Your first week
- Day 1: three real tasks from your week.
- Day 3: compare its results with what you'd have done yourself.
- Day 7: decide if it's worth paying, based on what you actually used.
Why this step matters: A week of real tasks gives you evidence for whether it saves time, instead of a first impression.
