Troubleshooting

I hit a daily limit.

Free tier: 50 chats and 3 Audio Overviews a day. Some limits refresh every 5 hours with a weekly cap since Sep 2, 2026.

Why is it called Gemini Notebook?

Google’s newer help pages use that name. Features covered here are the same.

The answer cites a page that doesn't say that.

Treat the claim as unverified. Ask it to quote the exact sentence from that page, or say it isn't there. Then open the page yourself.

It forgot my earlier instructions.

Long sessions push early text out of context. Put standing instructions where NotebookLM keeps them (Make one notebook per project or course, and name sources clearly so citations are easy to follow.) and start fresh.

It agrees with everything I say.

Ask it to argue the other side and list the strongest evidence against your view, with sources.

Cost control

The Standard (free) tier allows 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook, 50 chats a day, 3 Audio Overviews a day and 10 Deep Research runs a month. Paid Google AI plans raise this: Plus 200 notebooks and 100 sources; Pro 500 notebooks, 300 sources, 500 chats and 20 Audio Overviews a day; Ultra up to 600 sources. Each source can be up to 500,000 words or 200 MB.

Since Sep 2, 2026, some limits are compute-based: they refresh every 5 hours with a weekly cap (Google help, answer 16213268).

Prompt library: bad vs good

Bad: help me

Good: Using only my sources, list every deadline and dollar amount, each with a citation. If something is not in the sources, say "not in sources".

Why: situation, task, format and limits.

Bad: research this

Good: Find the 5 most relevant official sources from the last 12 months on [topic]. For each: title, date, link, and one sentence it actually says.

Why: asks for dated, quotable, checkable sources.

Bad: make it better

Good: Rewrite this for a busy customer: max 100 words, one ask, no jargon. Then list what you cut.

Why: a reader, a length and an audit of changes.

Bad: should I do X?

Good: List the 3 strongest reasons for and against X for someone in [situation]. Mark which reasons depend on facts I should check.

Why: balanced, and separates facts from judgement.
